YFL Build - 100sqm of Porcelain Paving (Phase 1)

Updated: Jan 23

Location

Beverley, East Yorkshire

Project Brief

Install 100m2 of porcelain paving to provide smooth, level access, into and around the property, facilitating wheelchair access to the front, side and rear.

Phase 1

With a community event being held at the client’s house the following weekend, the project was split into 2 phases to ensure that the front of the property would be ready to receive guests.

We started by bringing in additional MOT Type 1 to achieve the levels and falls needed to allow rainwater to flow away from the property, and then constructed the framework for the access ramps and steps. Gravel boards were installed along the length of the fence line to prevent the sub-base from escaping, and later to allow for the gravel border to be installed.

Next, we installed the drainage. For this project we opted to use Aco Threshold Drains with aluminium top grates. These give a smooth and seamless look, providing a flush doorway entry with the additional strength of the aluminium to ensure full support for wheelchair access. With these installed and connected to the existing rainwater drainage system we were ready to start paving.

The customer chose a square, 600 x 600mm country cream tile for this project, supplied by Ceramic Tile Merchants in Beverley. The Country Cream gives a clean off-white finish and when laid in a grid pattern makes for a crisp and contemporary look. We paired this with contrasting charcoal kerb edging for the entrance steps which tied in nicely to the header rows on the existing wall.

To create a 2-way fall ensuring rainwater would run away from the property to the front and side, a small mitre cut was required to the front right corner of the property. This was cut prior to laying the tiles so that both halves could be made to fall in perpendicular directions whilst maintaining the required grout gap and design.

Once complete we allowed the area to set for 36 hours and then grouted using a light Aspen colour to compliment the tiles and soften the lines, blending nicely with the exterior of the property.

We had a few days to spare before the art exhibition, so we set to work clearing the front of the property, removing all building materials and waste that had accumulated over the past 12 months of work at the client’s house. A final clean down of the tiles left the property looking spotless and we retired for the weekend happy to of finished ahead of schedule and in time for the clients to set up and prepare for their guests.

Another great job by the team and another great customer to work for. Check back for the completion of Phase 2 in a few weeks.
